Increasing safety and efficiency in the Drin River cascade

Supported by the World Bank and other partners, KESH implemented a project aimed at increasing dam safety, increasing the life of hydropower plants, increasing production and improving the country’s electricity supply. With the implementation of this project, the following interventions have been carried out:

Rehabilitation of discharge gates of HPPs of the Drini Cascade

Electromechanical renovation and installation of new monitoring system.

Consolidation and systematization of the Koman dam base Through these interventions, satisfactory results have been achieved for the safety of the Cascade and the efficiency of energy production by:

Significantly reduced energy losses due to uncontrolled leakage through gates, up to 11 GWh of annual energy.

Set up an emergency plan with alarm system to manage the situation in case of floods.

Optimize the Cascade and increase production by about 20 GWh per year.

This project increases the lifespan of works in the Drini Cascade by 30 years.
