The speech of the Administrator of KESH, Mr. Ergys Verdho at the World Congress on Sustainable Energy
The Paris Agreement is a legally binding and the most ambitious multilateral international treaty on climate change, adopted by 196 Parties at COP 21 in Paris. Albania signed the Paris Agreement in April 2016. Its goal is to limit global warming to well below 2, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, compared to pre-industrial levels.
To put the world on a pathway to limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5°C, the International Energy Agency (IEA) emphasises in its 2021 “Net Zero by 2050” report that
global hydropower capacity needs to at least double by 2050.
The 2021 World Hydropower Congress issued the San José Declaration on Sustainable Hydropower. This Declaration, which did the International Hydropower Association (IHA) issue as the Secretariat to the World Hydropower Congress, urges greater green investment in responsible hydropower development and places enhanced Environmental and Social Guidelines performance expectations on the sector in order to drive forward hydropower’s contribution to global climate goals. It has been shaped by a wide-ranging public consultation with participation from hundreds of organisations and individuals, including representatives from hydropower industry, NGOs, international financial institutions, NGOs, academia and research institutions, including the Albanian Power Corporation. The next steps will be to present the Declaration to world leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) in November.
The World Hydropower Congress also launched the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, a new ESG certification scheme that is the first of its kind in the renewables sector. The Standard underpins the San José Declaration by providing a basis for defining international good practices in hydropower sustainability.
The Albanian Power Corporation has started a successful cooperation with the International Hydropower Association through the project “Sustainable development of hydropower through capacity building and application of sustainable hydropower instruments in Albania and the Western Balkans”, financed by SECO (Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs).
In his speech at the World Congress for Sustainable Hydropower, the CEO of KESH sh.a. Mr. Ergys Verdho, among other things, emphasized the company’s support in investing towards the production of sustainable hydropower. The Albanian Power Corporation is seriously committed to a rational and sustainable use of renewable resources, thus guaranteeing communities and future generations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the production of clean energy.
